Choosing Between Invisalign & Braces

Choosing Between Invisalign & Braces
Posted on 06/04/2018

invisalign and bracesAt the office of Dr. Carole S. Randolph, our mission is to help each of our patients achieve a healthy, beautiful smile through convenient orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, though, "convenient" doesn't mean the same thing for everyone! We're proud to offer both braces and Invisalign at our Valencia orthodontist's office, but it can be difficult for patients to choose which treatment is right for them. If you're on the fence and aren't sure whether to get braces or Invisalign, we can help.

The Pros & Cons of Braces

First, let's talk about the truly classic orthodontic treatment: traditional metal braces. Braces are the oldest treatment in orthodontics, and they have a number of benefits. Here are the pros and cons of regular braces

Pros

  • Cost-effective
  • Strong & durable
  • Can treat almost any malocclusion
  • Reliable treatment

Cons

  • Highly visible
  • Can cause small cuts in mouth
  • Can't be taken out to eat and brush teeth
  • Require the use of floss threaders and other special tools for oral hygiene

The Pros & Cons of Invisalign

But what about Invisalign clear aligners? An alternative to braces, Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners to straighten the teeth instead of metal brackets. This gives Invisalign a number of advantages over braces, but it also comes with drawbacks. Here are the pros and cons of Invisalign:

Pros

  • Virtually invisible
  • No dietary restrictions
  • Smooth, comfortable aligners
  • Removable for eating & oral hygiene

Cons

  • More expensive than braces
  • Can't treat all malocclusions
  • Aligners can be lost or broken
